5 Ways to support someone with Dementia at Christmas

Christmas can be a difficult for those with Dementia here are 5 ways you can support your loved ones this Christmas.

Introduce Decorations Gradually
Ease them into the Christmas environment by adding decorations slowly, over a few days, rather than all at once. This helps reduce the overwhelming feeling of sudden change. If possible, involve them in setting up the decorations to keep them engaged.

Keep Things Simple and Familiar
During the festive season, it’s best not to overwhelm someone with dementia. Stick to familiar routines, with meals at regular times and in known surroundings, to minimize confusion and help them feel more at ease.

Encourage Participation
There are many ways to involve a loved one with dementia in Christmas activities, from simple tasks like putting up the nativity scene or hanging baubles on the tree, to helping with Christmas shopping or wrapping gifts.

Create a Quiet Space
Designate a quiet room or area in the home where they can retreat if things become too overwhelming. This space will provide a peaceful environment for relaxation, away from noise and excitement.

Bring Back Fond Memories
Old Christmas songs and classic holiday films can spark cherished memories. Creating a family photo album or a memory box is a lovely way to spend time together and reminisce about past holidays.
